James Suckling review: A red with pretty ripe fruit, such as currants and blueberries. Medium-to full-bodied with soft, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
Introduction: Located between the Mayacamas Range on the west and the Vaca Range on the east, the Calistoga AVA lies at the northern end of the Napa Valley. From the foot of Mount St. Helena, the appellation stretches approximately seven square miles before brushing against the St Helena, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain AVAs. It is one of the warmest parts of the valley and is most notable for its red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon.
Our 2017 Kukeri Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced vineyard located at the northern end of the Napa Valley, experiencing warmer days with a cool snap each evening thanks to the breezes coming over the hills from Knight’s Valley. Perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, these conditions encourage a lush, ripe character and fragrant aromas to develop in the grapes. A touch of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot, and Syrah and balance the rich dark fruit of our 2017 Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon, adding a vibrancy to its lush mouthfeel and lingering dry finish and great acidity.
Winemaking: The grapes are handpicked at the end of September, sorted and de-stemmed into small fermentation bins and allowed to cold soak for 3 days to help stabilize the color and enhance flavor. It was fermented for 15 days and punched down 3 times a day, with an additional 3 days extended maceration to increase extraction of color and phenolic compounds. The wine is then gently pressed and aged on fine lees for 18 months in mixture of 100% French oak barrels with 40% new French oak to preserve the delicate notes and mouthfeel
Tasting Notes: Bold and very well balanced the 2017 Kukeri Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibiting aromas of dark fruit, plum, warm spices and cigar box. On the palate, the rich and concentrated flavors of ripe blackberry, boysenberries and fresh mountain herbs are in perfect harmony with the rich, velvety texture, with beautifully integrated tannins, Great acidity and structure combine with a lush suppleness, contributing to the elegant silky finish, which makes this Cabernet Sauvignon a perfect accompaniment to any grilled meat dishes.
