Introduction:The Spring Mountain District sits above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains that separate Napa Valley from Sonoma County. The grapes for our 2017 Kukeri Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon are coming from a terraced vineyard located on the eastern slope of Spring Mountain within 1200 feet elevation.The steep slopes, red volcanic mix and rockier soilof the vineyard are producing grapes with small berries and intensely concentrated fruit flavors. The Cabernet grape selection is clone 337. A touch of Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Merlot, Syrah and Petite Sirah balance the rich dark fruit of our 2017 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, adding a vibrancy to its lush mouthfeel and lingering dry finish and great acidity.

Winemaking:The grapes were handpicked at the end of September, sorted and de-stemmed into small fermentation bins and allowed to cold soak for 5 days to help stabilize the color and enhance flavor. It was fermented for 12 days and punched down 3 times a day, with an additional 3 days extended maceration to increase extraction of color and phenolic compounds. The wine is then gently pressed and aged on fine lees for 18 months in mixture of 80% French and 20% American oak barrels with 40% new French oak to preserve the delicate notes and mouthfeel. Only 5 barrels produced.

Tasting Notes: True to the Spring Mountain appellation, this wine exhibits dark concentrated fruit flavors of black currants, blueberries, and black cherries and well-integrated fine-grained tannins with excellent mountain acidity. Big, bold, and ultra-ripe on the attack, packed with small black-fruit preserves, doused with creme de cassis. A hint of forest, cedar and rich vanilla French oak, and roast espresso flavors also combine these aromatics to create this nice mountain cabernet sauvignon.

This wine it is a superb candidate for cellaring and should mature well over the next 10 to 15 years.
